About Stac Pollaidh

Stac Pollaidh (pronounced "Stack Polly") is one of the most immediately recognisable and photographed mountains in Scotland — a compact, steep-sided peak with a wildly jagged pinnacled ridge, rising sharply from the flat Coigach moorland above Loch Lurgainn. At 612 metres it is not a Munro, but the walk to its summit ridge is one of the most dramatic short hill walks in the country. The panoramic views from the ridge encompass the extraordinary Assynt landscape — Suilven, Canisp, Quinag and Ben More Coigach, with the Outer Hebrides visible on the horizon on a clear day. The circular path around the mountain is well maintained and accessible to reasonably fit walkers.

Highlights

Dramatic pinnacled ridge
Panoramic views to Outer Hebrides
Circular hill path
Coigach & Assynt wilderness
Outstanding photography
🚐 Motorhome Tip Large car park at the base of the hill on the south side (signed from the A835). The car park can fill in summer — arrive early or be prepared to wait. The circular route (4.5km, 300m ascent to the col) takes 2–3 hours. The summit pinnacles require scrambling and are for experienced hillwalkers only.

Getting There

From Ullapool, drive north on the A835, then turn left onto the A837 toward Lochinver. After 5 miles, turn left on the minor road to Stac Pollaidh. Car park is on the left.

Best Time to Visit

May to September for best walking conditions. Summer midges can be fierce — bring repellent. The mountain looks spectacular from any direction and in any season.
