Thurso is the most northerly mainland town in Britain and the largest settlement on Caithness's north coast. The JET garage on Ormlie Road is one of the better-equipped fuel stops on the entire NC500, with AdBlue and good opening hours. Thurso has a Lidl, a Morrisons and various shops — an excellent resupply point. The town is also the ferry terminal for Orkney, and John o' Groats is just 20 miles east.

Thurso is a large enough town to have competitive fuel prices and a good Lidl. Fill up here — it's much cheaper than anywhere further west on the route.

Many stations close early and are not open on Sundays. Always fill up when you can — do not wait until the low-fuel warning light appears.
