About Thurso Castle
Thurso Castle stands as a substantial ruin on the eastern edge of Thurso town, at the mouth of the Thurso River. The castle was the seat of the Sinclairs of Ulbster (later the Dunbars) and the existing ruins date primarily to the 17th century, though there was a medieval stronghold on the site earlier. The ruins are integrated with later 19th-century additions and the whole complex is now disused. The castle can be seen from the coastal path along the Thurso River mouth and from the road on the eastern approach to town. While not a formal visitor attraction, it is an interesting ruin in the context of Thurso's history.
