About Forse Castle
Forse Castle is a little-visited 14th-century ruin on the Caithness coast between Whaligoe and Lybster, sitting on a clifftop above a dramatic geo (narrow cliff inlet) that acts as a natural moat. The castle was a Sutherland stronghold and the ruins retain some walling. The surrounding area has other points of interest including the Latheron Wheel, a carved Norse cross. This is deep Caithness โ rarely visited even by NC500 travellers who rush through this stretch โ and its isolation is part of its appeal.

๐ Motorhome Tip
Park at the roadside near Forse farm track. The walk to the castle is short (10 minutes) across agricultural land โ stay on paths. The geo below the castle is dramatic and should not be approached too closely. Combine with the nearby Whaligoe Steps for an excellent south Caithness coastal excursion.
Getting There
On the A9 between Lybster and Latheron. Turn off at Forse farm track. The castle is a short walk across the fields to the clifftop.
Best Time to Visit
Year round in dry conditions. The cliff geo is impressive when waves are running.
