Dornoch is one of Scotland's most charming small towns, a medieval Royal Burgh of honey-coloured sandstone buildings gathered around a magnificent 13th-century cathedral. The town has an extraordinary array of claims to fame: it hosts the Royal Dornoch Golf Course, ranked among the top 10 golf courses in the world; it was the site of the last judicial execution for witchcraft in Scotland in 1722; and in 2000 Madonna married Guy Ritchie in the castle hotel here. The sandy beach at Dornoch stretches for miles and is one of the finest on the eastern NC500. The Historylinks Museum tells the town's story with impressive local knowledge.
Turn off the A9 at the Dornoch junction, 2 miles south of the Dornoch Firth Bridge. Town centre is 2 miles west.
