About Borve Castle
Borve Castle near Durness survives as minimal remains of a medieval Mackay clan stronghold, sitting in the open moorland south of the village. The remains are fragmentary โ little survives above foundation level โ and the site is largely of historical interest rather than visual drama. It is worth noting if exploring the Durness area comprehensively, but the real draws nearby (Sango Bay, Balnakeil Beach, Smoo Cave) are far more rewarding. The castle's setting does reflect the remote, windswept nature of this far northern landscape.
