Redcastle is one of the oldest castle sites on the NC500, with origins dating to the 12th century when it was said to be built by William the Lion. The castle stands on the southern shore of the Beauly Firth on the Black Isle, in various states of ruin after centuries of conflict and neglect. The red sandstone masonry that gives the castle its name is still visible in the remaining walls. Access is on foot along the shoreline, and the ruin can be viewed from the road and beach. It is not a formal visitor attraction โ there are no facilities and the structure itself is dangerous to enter โ but the setting on the firth shore with views back to Inverness is atmospheric.
On the A832 on the south shore of the Black Isle, between the Kessock Bridge and Muir of Ord. Redcastle village is signed from the main road.
